I have long been an advocate for foreign films getting U.S. theatrical releases in their original form. For an incredibly long time, distributors have actively avoided releasing subtitled films to theatres. They often would choose to both dub and heavily recut the film into something that they believed would better connect with American audiences. Famously, after the Studio Ghibli film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, was heavily recut, Harvey Weinstein was mailed a katana, with an attached note reading ‘no cuts’, clearly as a threat in case he attempted to recut their other release, Princess Mononoke, prior to…

As I stated in my previous article, we need to organize and tell our elected officials to rejoin the national power grid. As many of us are frustrated and only have power and the internet for fleeting moments, I have created a sample letter for us to send.

Below are some of the individuals we can contact, but I recommend going here for more information.

Governor Greg Abbott — Website Contact Form

Lt. Governor Dan Patrick — Website Contact Form

Senator Ted Cruz — Website Contact Form

Senator John Cornyn — Website Contact Form

I write this not knowing how long my power will stay on, so apologies if I seem frantic or unfocused.

Texas is currently in a state of emergency. Millions are without power. People are desperately trying to find warmth, as their health declines and the body count rises. Food begins to spoil, as homes enter their second day straight without power. People have begun to venture out of their homes to try to find food, but either find that the stores are closed or are met with a line that wraps around the block. Individuals who are working from home…

Urban legends about our childhoods are extremely pervasive. Whether it be that the actor portraying Barney the Dinosaur was fired after it was found that he was storing cocaine in the tail of the suit or that the kids of the cul-de-sac in “Ed, Edd, ‘n Eddy” are all dead and are stuck in purgatory, we seem to find great joy in uncovering these imagined ‘dark origins’ of the media we consumed, regardless of the truth. Some are even treated as fact, as many people believe that “Ring Around the Rosie” is about the bubonic plague, when there is no…

The SISEA bill will kill people, plain and simple.

This is an incredibly abrupt way to start an article, and it may even sound like scaremongering but it is absolutely the correct way to define this situation. If you are unfamiliar with the SISEA bill, here is a brief summary. It is a bipartisan bill being sponsored by Republican senator Ben Sasse and Democrat senator Jeff Merkley. In its pure essence, the bill is attempting to achieve something actually admirable. The bill is attempting to curb the practice of revenge-porn, the practice in which a person…

Content Warning: Racism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Slurs

As the 2020 election comes to a close, many individuals breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that Donald Trump will be leaving office in only a few months. Our country’s collective nightmare is over and we can return to normalcy.

Except for many, it isn’t over. We can’t return to ‘normalcy’.

Donald Trump was not an aberration of our political process. He is simply the most honest form of the systems in which we live. “He’s the best American president. Why? Not because his policies are good, but because he’s the most transparent president,”…

CW: transphobia, dysphoria, suicide

NOTE: All dead names have been redacted

In December of 2014, tragedy swept through the trans community. Leelah Alcorn, a 17 year old trans girl from Ohio, had committed suicide by walking into traffic on a busy highway. “Please don’t be sad for me, it’s for the better,” her suicide note posted to Tumblr reads. “The life I would’ve lived isn’t worth living in… because I’m transgender.” Alcorn goes on to detail that she felt she was girl since age 4, and that she cried tears of joy when she learned what being transgender meant, at…
